A riff is a repeating pattern of notes which can be either played throughout a verse (or even a whole song) or altered to fit a chord progression. Riffs are very common in Funk, Blues, Jazz and Rock, and the Blues scale is excellent for creating riffs. Here are some riffs derived from the Blues scale. After you have learned these, try inventing some of your own riffs.
